by the lakeshore

Happy weekend! Did you have a happy fourth? We've had family in town for the week. Lots of swimming, parade going, boating, firework watching, birthday candle blowing, eating, and laughing. Our little town puts on quite the sparkly show for Independence Day.

On Sunday, we're heading North for our annual vacation in Door County. The girls are pretty excited. To be honest, I am too. The weather forecast is predicting daytime temperatures in the mid-seventies and nights in the low sixties. We're in the middle of a record setting heat wave / drought, and those temperatures sound like my idea of heaven.  We'll bring the boat and spend most of our time on the beautiful lake, buzzing around.

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.

Was wondering how the weather was where you and a lot of my other blogger acquaintances are located in mid/east USA; sounds awful; terribly hot. Happy for you and your family but green with envy(!) about vacationing in Door County...my dream destination! Years ago, I enjoyed the "escape"/de-stress novels (light and entertaining stories, sometimes historical, dramatic with humor...and mostly romantic!) of an author who is long since retired...LaVyrle Spencer...and she used Door County as the backdrop for her book BITTER SWEET. She would research her locations thoroughly for authenticity, writing one book per year. The descriptions of Fish Creek and other places in Door County, both in summer and winter, sounded heavenly; I actually, occasionally hit up weather.com to see what the weather is like in those neck 'o the woods. Have never been to these locales, and I have such curiosity about them. I would LOVE to go to Wisconsin, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Minnesota, etc. Your posted lakeshore image evokes such summery pleasure. I do think that, for kids, a solo destination where they can settle in is much more enjoyable for them than an extended, days-on-end road trip, although I enjoyed those Route 66-style road trips when I was older, from the pre-teens. But my fond memories from younger childhood are spending a couple of weeks at the ocean beach house we leased in August, staying for a week or so at a national park in the same, familiar cabin each June; the favorite summer rental cottages at the lake up in the mountains. Biking, swimming, cookouts, reading, napping, playing, hiking, outdoor movies, nature talks, fishing...gosh, it was the life! Shared, local activities; getting to know the other kids doing the same thing with their families; feeling comfortable with a place. Nobody and nothing can take away those glorious, happy, stress-free family vacations from my childhood. All these years later, I am so, so grateful to my parents, who managed to scrape some vacation money aside for these modest trips resulting in mega memories. How wonderful for your family to enjoy your own getaway this summer...have lots of fun and great experiences!
