road trip readiness

Our family loves a good road trip. We always completely pack up the car the night before...

Up before the sun, we shower, dress, and hop in.

Half the fun, is opening their totes to see what goodies might be included this time.

It's getting harder and harder to surprise them. But, I still try.
Fruit flavored candy looks so much cuter 'bento' style, don't you think?

Have you seen the Rosie Flo series of coloring books? They're really well done. My girls love them.

What's your favorite family road trip memory?
I'd love to hear it.

Oh those beautiful, beautiful bags! I've have been peering at my screen to try to read the label, but can't quite manage - can you help?

And your methodical packing is a wonder!

Haven't seen the Rosie Flo books but will look for them. I'm always on the hunt for fun little surprises for my grand girls when we see them. Your Lands End bags look great all lined up.

Road trip memory? Taking our 1 & 3 year olds to meet their great-grandparents. We made a 'playroom' for them in the back of our Blazer and they had such a blast. Yes, that was long before car seats and seat belts were required...

I love the idea of them each having their own tote and not knowing what's in them until they're on the road. What a fun, fun, idea. Especially now that they look forward to it. My two young kids always pack a car bag (even on short jaunts), but I love the element of surprise! I'm adopting your tradition.

Sigh...Claire has that sweet Land's End bag for her overnights. But I must say that the goodies that you pack are beyond gorgeous. Perhaps I can take a road trip with you? Smiles...Renee

When I was growing up, we took a two-week summer vacation every year. My mom would plan out our itinerary for every moment of the day -- hiking was always involved. Even when we went to Hawaii when I was 14, we didn't go to the beach, we hiked to dormant volcanoes. :) On the long drive, my brother would usually sleep in the floor of the car, even with that hump in the middle, and I would get the seat.

When I travel now with my two boys, I always get special treats for their carry-ons and since we are always flying, lots of gum to help with ear problems.

Have a great trip! Looks like you packed just right. Best wishes, Tammy

Road trips look absolutely delightful in your family! My sister and I loved getting matching crossword/word search books so we could do the identical pages at the same time. Whoever got done first won. =)

Oh those bags are just so sweet... what a fun addition to any road trip ! I'll bet the girls will have this memory for ever and continue it with their own kidlets some day!

I LOVE coloring books - so relaxing and nostalgic. I just finished a Victorian House one. I'm going to look up the ones you mentioned right now!

I'm having a STINKY Give Away on Lavender Hill... I'd love it if you'd pop over and check it out !

I thought of you this morning. We were also up at dawn vacation bound to Mackinac island. The girls had totes filled with new crayons and coloring pencils to stay busy on the van drive. Josie is addicted to dot-to-dot coloring books right now. We've had a glorious day on the island. The last time we came, we were only a family of three. It's been so much fun sharing this with Josie. Everything is exciting all over again. I hope you take lots of trip pics, Molly. HUGS!!

I wish I was your little girl! :)

My mom once had some sort of road trip bingo game for us. Oh my - that was fun! Then another time, I was given a little Indian girl doll on a trip and that really kept me busy! She had a little shoe box to live in and I just loved it!

Have fun! ♥

Hope you have a great trip! I have totes for all my girls, too. :) I am curious as to which island you're visiting in Michigan, being as we are outside of Traverse City. Enjoy our lovely state and our beautiful water! :)

OH my! Your road trips are complete with a pile of 'cuteness!' You are such a great mom! Your girls are blessed to have you.

When my sister and I were about eight and ten years old we traveled all the way from here in Alberta to Texas to pick up a horse. It was a long trip, but was such a blast to be able to stay in hotels and watch cartoons in bed and eat different treats than we have at home here when we would stop at the gas station. It's all about making memories, eh?

Love your style!

We drove from California to Kentucky and hit 13 states in 15 days. It was wonderful to see the middle of the country and get a feeling for the vastness of the prairies and the Rocky Mountains. My Baby Bee and Worker Bee drove to San Francisco this morning so they could go the Comic Strip Museum for the Archie Comics Celebration. Should have packed for them like you did. I'll have to remember your different colored bags. Great idea!

We looove the Rosie Flo books in this house too!
Aren't they totally goreous!

I'm absolutely going to buy those plastic containers- yes it all looks gorgeous o-bento style- I pinned your image to my *little lovelies* page....

And lastly - those totes lined up are just too sweet....I'd have my eye on the darker blue & calico...

One of our greatest road trips has to be driving down to France, across the Channel on the ferry, and then into the French countryside...this way one can fill her people moving car with goodies from Brocante's...!

Enjoy yours...looking forward to more lovely travel photos...

My girls would have adored totes full of goodies like that when they were little! My favorite road trips were our vacations in Washington DC and Boston. The girls always said the ride was as much fun as the destination. We always stopped as soon as anyone felt the need and we talked and sang and saw new things all the way. Oh how I miss those road trips!

Oh, goodness...I want to go on a roadtip with y'all if I get those kinds of goodie bags! I must admit we've been on a few roadtrips this summer and I didn't pack that cute of a bag for Stella. You've certainly inspired me! Have a great week, Molly! xo

Hi Molly. Claudie from Canada here to say bonjour.
I adore your blog so much and had to say hello today.
I have 3 children now 18, 20 and 22.
We had many many road trips. From Canada to many States and back to Canada. I too would make them little treat bags with candy and colouring books, little maps of where we were going and a special game with license plates. Those were some of our best times together.
I'm sorry your your eldest is sick. I hope she is all smiles after all those sweet goodies you so lovingly made for them.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and congrat's on the boat. WOW

Awww looks like such a fun road trip! I want a goodie bag :)

When I was younger we took a big ole motor home to the east coast, that was probably one of my favorite!

You inspire me to have more kids! Those bags look so gorgeous all lined up. I don't think my two look nearly so darling ( bags, not girls. Of course my girls are darling!).

Hello, that really makes fun for the kids with so much goodies.
We also liked to make a road trip when our son was a child, but now he is already 29 and makes the road trips with his friends or his girlfriend. But thats life.
So enjoy the time with your kids, now. Time passes so quickly. I am glad, because my son still lives in our house. Soon he will move in his own home together with his girlfriend. Iam also very happy for that.
Have a nice weekend. Love Tina

The monogramed bags for the girls are really cute! You have packed lots of fun activities for the ride. I love that Rosie Flo's Garden book!! (I was just thinking that the hosta bloom pictured in my latest post looked like a wedding dress for a little garden fairy.)

Love the way you put candies in the containers - so attractive, so fun. Would love to go to the island! Our favorite family road trip was 2006, we drove from VA to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward island. With stops in Philly for the Liberty Bell, Boston, and Maine. The kids were 10 and 7, just right to visit Anne of Green Gables area with all the delightful drama there. Thanks for evoking that memory!

Hugs,
