the desk

Do you have a 'desk of one's own'? Virginia Woolf wrote, A Room of One's Own, an extended essay exploring the need for women to have a room in which to write, in 1929. I don't have the luxury of my own room, but I do have a desk. It's a 'partner desk' found at a yard sale sporting an ignominious shade of yellow with gold highlights. After a quick coat of white paint, oil cloth, and some sparkly knobs, it's much happier.
I share the desk with my four daughters. They like to stash all of their important papers, folders, and art projects on it. I'm not a fan of that habit. They might have heard a word or two on the subject from me...

For our anniversary, my husband surprised me with a new white iPad 2. That, I can finally call my 'own', at least for a little while. I needed a case for it, beyond the smart cover that Apple sells, so I took a peek at Etsy. I found a sweet case with vintage flair, in strawberry oilcloth.
The blue typewriter table with the little light on the left, was found at an estate sale. It's such a pretty color, and it works perfectly for the printer and supplies, even if it does lean a little to the right.
The girls are finishing school this week and then, summer officially begins.
We're kicking it off with a 1,200 mile road trip. Any guesses as to where we're going?

I'm joining the fun at the following:

Hint, it's state flower is the Rocky Mountain Columbine.

I love your happy desk...my 'desk-of-my-own' is a tiny wood-top wicker number, that's been waiting for fresh paint for 3 or 4 years now. You are inspiring me to get to it!

And I do love my white iPad, too!

Miss Molly...I love how you remade this french provencial piece yours. Beautiful from the CK tape that we share to the fantastic colors. Very clean. I however have not been as fortunate with CK. I am still waiting on an order that I place almost 30 days ago. They told me to call back on the 4th if it is not here. Please tell me this is a fluke and that you have had a much different experience. Your shared desk is decorated so lovely...all the way down to the typewriter cart...smiles...Renee

Your space is so cheery and inspiring...even if you have to share with those girls :) They do bring home lots of paper don't they?

You mentioned last night that you must have missed a post or two of mine. Yup my hubby's company started doing layoffs (luckily it hasn't affected us yet, but just a matter of time) so we have been looking for the last few months and he got an offer in NY. It is awfully far from all that we love in WA, but such is life...we have to move.

Back on topic - love your desk!!

What a sweet place to call your own. I love your colors and your vintage style. I do have a space but I'm afraid I'm a bit like your girls and I need to start picking up after myself. Thanks for the little talk. Can I come off time out now?

A space of my own I own. I have my mac on my kitchen island and its the perfect place. Hubby can't find his way in the room called a kitchen. Its easy for me here, home central. I can conduct all business while I stir up a little dinner. My husband gave me the new ipad 2 a few weeks back and I use it when I curled up in my chair or use it in bed before going to sleep. I love your space because its so bright and cheerful. I may have to created a space like this too......I love it. Hope your road trip will be fabulous. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Hi Molly,
Your desk is absolutely the cutest and sweetest out there! :) Reminds me of what you would have in your pretty home!! I love how organized it all looks. Happy Belated Anniversary to you and your husband! I hope it was a sweet one!

I do have a desk, a shared one, it was one we bought for my dear hubby. He doesn't use it often, so I do! :) It is dark wood, a secretary (I think that is what you call it), in our bedroom. I actually just close my laptop up (I don't have an IPad) put it in one of the drawers, so it does not gather too much dust when not in use. I close up the secretary desk, and I am good to go.

I have no idea where you are going. Maybe to the beach? Where ever it is, I hope it is a wonderful time spent with your sweet family. Happy Summer to you, dear Molly...enjoy!!! :)

xoxo...Gloria

Birdie Blue, Birdie Blue, I look back upon my writing in life as soft moments on lazy days at dawn where I sat at a desk much like this sipping coffee and staining the yellow paint beneath. The drawers are stuffed with notes, envelopes, statements, everyday kind of life things, but underneath the humdrum is the good stuff -- poems, sonnets and love notes, pens and pads of handmade papers scented with sealing wax and lavender drops, and dried pansies between the pages -- thank you so much for discovering what was on the inside of me, the desires of my heart, and having them show up on the outside, the surface so I can smile. Blessings Terri www.morningdewdrops.typepad.com
