memorial day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below...
John McCrae, In Flanders Fields (1915)
Early this morning, we went to our village's green for a ceremony commemorating Memorial Day. The marching band played, solemn speeches were heard, the Gettysburg Address was recited, God Bless America was sung, In Flanders Fields was spoken, Taps was trumpeted, guns saluted, the wreath was placed, and the American Flag was raised by the Scouts.
It was a beautiful morning made more so, by such a moving, respectful, well attended ceremony.
Happy Memorial Day.

Gorgeous and moving pictures, Molly. I thought of my Dad all day and the time he spent serving in Vietnam in the mash unit. Definitely remembering....

Happy Memorial weekend.

"..To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, thought poppies grow in Flanders fields. "

Those words can't help but move the reader. (I know this one by heart... I helped my son memorize if for a school assignment when he was in 6th grade.)

We have the World War l Memorial here in town and I am one of those people that gets a lump in my throat and a leak in my eyes as soon as I see the poppies at the entrance.

Molly, beautiful post. Here in Kansas City we have the WWII memorial. As you walk in the doors you cross the glass floor and look below to see a field of red poppies...Flander's Field. It made such an impression on me. Each time we take a scout troop or family trip there I make sure to have each one understand the importance of that moment. Somethings speak louder than words...Renee

Looks like a sweet day!

Your stroller (girls) and camp chairs are the cutest!! I have never seen gingham ones like those. We pack chairs in our car trunk and use them at all our town's family functions. Adorable! :)
